Hello Purpose Seekers! Welcome to the Purpose Lounge podcast with your host, Carrie Morris. I'm thrilled to introduce you to one of my life mentors, my dad, John Gilbert! John is one of the last great American "Shoe Dogs." His life story is both inspiring and motivating.
Growing up in the 40's, John was forced to move around from place to place, living with different family members along the way from grandparents to aunts and uncles. He struggled a lot in school and it was only until much later in life that he was self-diagnosed with ADHD.
Without a label to place on his disability, and without a structured network of caregivers, John took life and career into his own hands. By selling newspapers on the streets where he grew up at the age of 8 or 9, to opening and running several successful retail stores across the country, John is the epitome of a self-made entrepreneur.
Listen closely to this interview, I promise you will pick up on some very important lessons. Messages around overcoming adversity, living out your wildest adventures despite the naysayers, turning a disability into an ability, and finding out that a strong network can absolutely make your career.
